Ministers Announce Policies on Childcare, Foreign Affairs, and Industry Support

Afternoon (22 May) – Domestic and Defence Policy

Liz Kendall stated, “We are rebuilding Britain for the modern age, creating jobs, businesses and opportunities across the country.” Separately, John Healey described a “Back British mission to boost skills, productivity and innovation” as part of a new Labour approach to rising defence investment. The Attorney General’s Office reported that Solicitor General Ellie Reeves spoke at a CPS Advocacy Conference (link). Yvette Cooper stated that the “E1 settlement plans in the West Bank are egregious.”

Evening (22 May) – Social Policy and Ministerial Engagements

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology reported that AI and Online Safety Minister Kanishka Narayan heard from parents and young people in Northern Ireland about “life online.” The Ministry of Defence also commemorated 15 years since the end of operations in Iraq, noting that the Defence Secretary joined 1,000 veterans at the National Memorial Arboretum (link). Wes Streeting stated he would “restore Sure Start” to give every child the best start in life. The Ministry of Justice announced that David Lammy and the Lady Chief Justice launched the Judicial and Legal Diversity Board to “break down barriers.” Lisa Nandy MP posted, “We’ve been friends for years and neighbouring MPs… but I’m sorry, I can’t support this.”

Outlook / Emerging Trends

The Northern Ireland Office announced that applications for the “£1 million Community Partnership Fund” are open until 5pm on Friday 19 June 2026. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport stated the new Independent Football Regulator “will ensure fans have a greater say” in how their clubs are run. Additionally, Peter Kyle announced that a package of support for the ceramics sector “will protect thousands of jobs”. Wes Streeting stated he “would restore Sure Start” with an extra £1.7bn in funding.
